Grezy weekly: lessons learned and what's next
Looking back on a few months of the Grezy blog, Tom and Nicolas reflect on their growth, audience feedback, and the unexpected insights gained from writing. They share plans to keep mixing project updates, entrepreneurship tips, and tech deep dives to keep readers engaged.
Hi there, Tom here! It's been a few months since Nicolas and I launched the Grezy blog and newsletter, aiming to document our journey in entrepreneurship and tech. Having written our 10th article last week, we thought it would be interesting to take this week's article to recap. Here’s a look back at what we’ve learnt, some milestones we’ve hit, and where we’re planning to go next.
The state of the newsletter
Since we started the newsletter this summer, 17 wonderful people have subscribed to it and joined us on the journey. We'd like to thank you for the support and all the feedback you've given us!
We're delighted to see that engagement is staying high, which probably means that we're writing stuff our audience enjoys!
As you can see, we're averaging 75% open rate on our emails, which is pretty high! Each article is being read by 15-25 people consistently, and we're starting to get the first readers we don't know in real life, which is pretty crazy! Welcome to all of you!
What we've learnt
I quite often get asked, “What's the point of writing a free newsletter to promote your business?”. I believe this misses the point entirely. We are very well aware no business will come from this project, and that's fine! So what is the point of this project?
Keeping track of the past
The main reason we started writing these articles was to be able to keep track of our evolution. It's often very insightful to look back at what's been accomplished in the past, and how we got to where we are now. This blog is our way of keeping track of this. Making it public makes it so we can't go back and erase parts we might not enjoy as much, forces us to keep it regular (every Sunday), and makes sure the writing quality stays high.
Reflecting on our choices
When we get down to writing an article about something we did this week, we often realise we could have done things slightly differently. Putting your choices into words can open points of view you didn't consider in the past. Take the article about the CountAct presentation for instance. Reflecting on what we'd learnt and writing it down was a truly insightful exercise. Here's the article, if ever you missed it:
The feedback funnel
We've had so much feedback, varied feedback, come from writing these articles. Professional copy-writers have given us tips on how to improve our writing skills. Experienced developers have contacted us to discuss the technical issues presented in the Docker article:
We've even had security experts audit our websites and reports bugs they found. All of that through the power of sharing our thoughts and findings in this blog.
Practising our English
It's been a real challenge for Nicolas (whose mother tongue is French) to write quality articles in English every other week. Overcoming it has been a team effort, and he now is way more comfortable with this language. This is a major asset for the years to come, as most of our clients speak English.
Our plans for the future
Currently, our audience is split up into three (even-ish) main groups:
1) Those who follow us to get updates on our project
2) Those who enjoy the entrepreneurship tips
3) Those who are here for the technical deep dives
This split makes writing articles that everyone will enjoy slightly more complicated than it used to be, when all of our audience was part of the first group.
So here's our plan for the months to come: we aim to keep on posting articles with the same frequency as we now do, mixing and matching sections that cater to each of our three audience groups in each article. For example, an article might start off presenting the current situation of Grezy, then explain some of the entrepreneurship choices we've made, and finally dive into some technical difficulties we might have faced.
Of course, as always, we are more than happy to discuss this with you, the audience, so don't hesitate to send us a message, or use the comment section below this article!
Conclusion
In closing, we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who’s joined us on this journey so far. Writing this blog has been more than just a project—it's become a way for us to document our growth, share our reflections, and connect with people who resonate with our experiences. The feedback, engagement, and encouragement from each of you have been invaluable, helping us refine our approach and push our ideas further.
As we move forward, we're excited to continue bringing you insights from Grezy, weaving together our updates, entrepreneurship lessons, and technical explorations. Here's to many more shared milestones and discoveries ahead. Thank you for being part of our story—let’s keep building together!
